Last week Malcolm had his first appointment for a more in depth hearing test. At six months kids with Down Syndrome get this done because they can be more susceptible to hearing loss due to upper respiratory infections and ear infections. Malcolm has been " congested" since birth, he always sounds like he has a lot of mucus. The suction bulb is in constant use.
Children with DS tend to have smaller ears and ear canals. Aren't his cute? Malcolm responds well to our voices and he loves to engage in conversations with us. He is very vocal. He mummbles, coos and babbles just like any other six month old.
Our appointment was at the Clark School for Hearing and Speech and I was impressed with the professionalism and care they showed to Malcolm.
When we returned home the kids and I discussed what took place at the appointment. We talked about the parts of the ear, vibrations and sound waves.
Having a child with DS is such an opportunity for all of us to learn something new each day. It is a great experience and helps me to practice my Catholic faith by trying to serve Malcolm and my family better.

This is such a great post. You're so right... having a child with Ds gives us the opportunity to learn something new ourselves. I never looked at it that way, but you're so right. Your little Malcolm is a doll!
